wardrobe essentials

Unfortunately, there will not be any outfit posts this week!  I have officially been out of commission for over a week now due to an upper respiratory infection/ walking pneumonia .  I have never missed this many days of work before, or spent so much time sleeping and taking steam showers.  Thankfully I have had Coco and Ryan trying to nurse me back to health, and it appears that I am on the road to recovery- fingers crossed.

I have had a lot of time to do some thinking this week, and one thing that I have not covered on my blog, thus far, is a wardrobe checklist.  I have seen many of these "Closet Checklists" floating around on various blogs and on Pinterest.  I have seen some that are extremely valuable, and some that are just plain unrealistic.

I have decided to put together a list of my personal wardrobe essentials.  This has been an evolving project of sorts, and I myself do not yet have all of these items that I believe to be essentials.  I am still finding myself in an awkward transition of style.  I still have many clothes/shoes/accessories in my closet from high school and college. I do not wear them (as if!), but I mentally cannot purge clothes from my closet unless I have something to replace them with.
It literally makes me feel panicked.

I never realized what a bad shopper I had been until after I graduated college.  I was no longer in a place were it was socially acceptable to wear Nike shorts and sorority formal t-shirts.  Most of my clothes were "trendy," and I definitely lacked the basics.  I never wanted to buy a boring white tee or denim jacket when I could spend my money on something more popular at that time (Bebe tops- I am looking at you.) I was needing to build a professional wardrobe for work, with pieces that could be worn on the weekends, out on the town, and didn't make me feel like a frumpy older woman.

I feel that I am much more educated and thoughtful regarding what I spend my money on now.  I truly believe that it is so important to splurge (if necessary) on timeless, classic pieces that will transcend the years, and utilize places like Forever21, H&M, and Zara for the trendy, of the moment pieces.   So here it is- my idea of a wardrobe checklist, and my ultimate goal for my closet!  Most of these I buy in several colors and prints, if applicable!  I definitely stock up when I find something perfect for me.

Outerwear
Trench Coat // Leather Jacket // Denim Jacket // Utility Jacket // Fur Vest // Blazer // Wool/Pea Coat // Tweed Jacket // Leopard Coat

Tops
Striped Tee // Chambray Blouse // White Blouse // Cardigan // Gingham Blouse // Polkadot Blouse // Plaid Blouse // Plain T-shirt // Turtleneck

Bottoms
Pencil Skirt // White Skinny Jeans // Leather Leggings // Boyfriend Jeans // Skinny Jeans // Floral/Patterned Skirt // Floral/Patterned Pants // Camo Skinny Jeans // Denim Cut Off Shorts

Shoes
Riding Boots // Rain Boots // Biker/Moto Boots // Sandals/Flip Flops // Espadrilles/Wedges // Strappy Sandals // Ballet Flats // Basic Pumps // Booties

Accessories
Crossbody Bag // Scarf // Gloves // Sunglasses // Stackable Bracelet // Clutch // Boyfriend Watch // Handbag // Monogram Necklace

Again, these are just my personal choices and goals I have for my own closet!
Hopefully this will be a helpful tool for some of you who also need to build from the basics.

What are your wardrobe must haves?

Sincerely,

blogger spotlight: a devine life

This week's blogger spotlight is featuring the sweet and lovely style blogger, Emily Devine, author of A Devine Life. Something about Emily, a California native, gives me a "Sarah Vickers (Classy Girls Wear Pearls) vibe"- but with more edge.

And I mean that in the most amazing way.

Her outfits seem to be so effortlessly polished, classic, and feminine.  Even better, she has been so kind and supportive to me as a fellow blogger! Don't you just love it when you e-meet darling people?

Keep reading for some inside scoop on Emily's personal style and blogging tips!

WUYW:  Of all of your posts, which outfit or feature has been your absolute favorite thus far?

Wow! This is a super hard question. I think maybe Twirling nTulle, or the outfit I posted on my Blogiversary.

WUYW:  Why would you consider this your best post to date?

Wearing plaid and tulle together is something I never thought I would do. But I loved it! And I had so much fun twirling around in the poofy skirt for pictures.

WUYW:  How/why/when did you decide to start a fashion blog?

If you asked me what a style blog was a couple years ago, I would have had no idea what you were talking about. I started A Devine Life about a year ago as a creative outlet to write about whatever, but after a few months, it became more about style and less about ice cream and indie movies. Yes, I once wrote a post about ice cream.

WUYW:  What was your biggest hesitation regarding starting a blog, and how did you overcome that hesitation?

It was really hard taking and posting pictures of myself! I mean, it’s a pretty awkward process. Figuring out how to pose, having people stare, then trying to find picture you aren’t making a weird face in…definitely a challenge. Eventually, I got used to people staring, figured out what poses showed off the outfits best, and embraced the sometimes strange faces. Also, I was pretty terrified that people would be mean in the beginning. But the blogging community is incredibly supportive!

WUYW:  What would be your biggest piece of advice for others who are just starting a blog?

Be yourself. Write about things that interest you and the growth will happen organically. You can tell when someone is really passionate about what they are doing. Also, put energy into your pictures! Good quality pictures go a long way.

WUYW:  What do you do for a living?

I write website copy, newletters, and blog for a women’s clothing company, GoJane.

WUYW:  How would you describe your style?

This is always a hard question to answer! Probably feminine, laid back, and colorful.

WUYW:  If you could only save one item from your closet (heaven forbid), what item would it be?

Oh my gosh. This is stressing me out just thinking about it. I would probably save the jewelry I inherited from family members. Or my CK purse, it’s my best friend.

WUYW: Who or what is currently influencing your style the most?

Bloggers! I read so many amazing blogs, and I think I get more inspiration from them than any celebrity. Although, I always love Lauren Conrad.

WUYW:  If you could trade closets with anyone, who would it be with?

Blair Eadie of Atlantic-Pacific! The girl oozes fabulous. Or maybe Miranda Kerr or Lauren Conrad (again).

what i wore: psychedelic prints

Dress: Prabal Gurung for Target | Shoes: Prabal Gurung for Target | Bag: Piperlime (no longer available) | Sunnies: Prada | Necklace: Ann Taylor (no longer available) | Bracelets: David Yurman 1, 2, 3, and 4, Candy Couture Spike Bracelet c/o (similar here) | Ring: David Yurman

I am pretty sure almost every person owns this amazing dress from the Prabal Gurung for Target collection.  When I first tried it on, the x-small was really huge!  I was so sad to have to put it back due to the poor fit.  A few weeks later I went back to Target with my mom and tried on this dress again.  My mom said that it would be an easy breezy alteration, so I definitely had to snatch it up!  I love the bright colors paired with this bold and graphic print, which reminds me of Clover Canyon prints and/or Peter Pilotto for a fraction of the price! And I am pretty sure I haven't taken off these Prabal lime sandals since they were first purchased ;)

Ryan and I stumbled upon these beautiful spring blooms and had to stop and snap some pics- so springy!

PS:  This is the last of the photo shoots taken with my old camera!
Can't wait to start displaying some DSLR photos :)

what i wore: citrus grove

Top: ModCloth- no longer available (similar here) | Skirt: Asos- no longer available (similar here) | Shoes: Express (old) | Bag: Coach | Necklaces: J.Crew | Sunnies: Ray Ban | Bracelets: David Yurman 1, 2, 3, and 4 and Candy Couture Spike Bracelet c/o (similar here) | Ring: David Yurman

I ordered this blouse from ModCloth back in January.  Something about it reminded me of the fifties, and I always jump at a chance to pull inspiration from the past. Also I think I was desperately longing for spring! I couldn't think of anything more perfect to pair with it than this cream accordion skirt and Coach Legacy Willis Bag (another fabulous birthday gift from Ryan). Both the skirt and the purse seem to have a nostalgic element of design.

Sincerely,

what i wore: sequins + tees

Jacket:  LC Lauren Conrad (old- similar here) | Tee: SheInside | Skirt:  Birthday Gift (similar here) | Shoes: Prabal Gurung for Target | Bag: Celine | Glasses: Prada | Necklace: Christmas Gift (similar here)  | Bracelets:  David Yurman 1, 2, 3, and 4, Candy Couture Shop Spike Bracelet c/o (similar here) | Ring: David Yurman

One of my most favorite birthday presents, which happens to be from my amazing mother in law, has to be this sweet and simple tee!  I am all about a great basic tee, particularly in black and white. I really loved the idea of dressing it up with a sequin skirt (uber feminine...and also a bday gift from Mom 2) and then adding some edge with a leather jacket and some sick  shoes.  The possibilities of styling this super soft shirt are endless!

WUYW:  Of all of your posts, which outfit or feature has been your absolute favorite thus far?

WUYW:  Why would you consider this your best post to date?

It was the first time I wore shorts on my blog, so I was proud of myself for that!  Also this outfit is quintessentially me – chambray shirt, tailored blazer + polka dots.

WUYW:  How/why/when did you decide to start a fashion blog?

I started PPF in February of 2011 after my girlfriends & sister-in-law encouraged me to…mainly because they were tired of texting me to ask for my fashion advice!

WUYW: What was your biggest hesitation regarding starting a blog, and how did you overcome that hesitation?

For the longest time, I didn’t post outfit pictures…because I wasn’t 100% comfortable with posing for the camera.  But my readers kept asking for it so I begrudgingly started posting them and then they just asked for more, so now I do them 2-3 times a week.  My husband (who takes all my pictures) is so sweet & patient with me, which really helps my comfort level.

WUYW:  What would be your biggest piece of advice for others who are just starting a blog?

Be yourself, always say thank you & don’t be afraid to say no to opportunities that come your way – even if they are profitable, they may not pay off in the end if it isn’t a natural fit for your site.

WUYW:  What do you do for a living?

I am a wife & stay-at-home mom first & foremost.  I’m a blogger second.

WUYW:  How would you describe your style?

Classic & feminine

WUYW:  If you could only save one item from your closet (heaven forbid), what item would it be?

My white H&M blazer – the fit is perfect, it goes with everything & I wear it a lot!

WUYW:  Who or what is currently influencing your style the most?

My 9-year-old daughter.  I love watching her develop an interest in fashion as she gets older and her brave combinations inspire me to take more risks & it’s a good reminder to have fun with my style.

WUYW:  If you could trade closets with anyone, who would it be with?

Blake Lively – think about all that Chanel!!
